Summary: Toxinelle is strong. She's allowed to cause mayhem as long as she tries to get Hesperia's Miraculous. Marinette in her everyday life is weak, pathetic, and trampled on. There's only so much bullying someone can take before they break. AU. Rating: Mature.
(the shadybug au.)
one-shot
“You can't just ask someone if their parents hurt them—”
“Why not?” Marinette took a bite of the cookie. It was too good to be store-bought.
“Do yours hurt you?” he countered.
She nodded.
Adrien gasped. “What?”
“It's not that bad,” she replied, bringing the whole tray back over with her. There was room on the desk for it. “Chloé does so much worse. It's just a few comments and maybe a slap or two, you know?”
He was gawking at her.
Marinette squinted. “Maybe you don't know.”
“How—how could they do that to you?” he stammered, looking her over critically. “Are you hurt right now? I have a first-aid kit somewhere.”
“I'm fine,” she assured him.
“You just told me you're abused.”
“Adrien, I'm not chained up and left to starve in the basement,” she replied, passing a cookie over for him to eat. He accepted it but didn't go to take a bite. “I barely see them. They're always busy at work, so it's, like, us bumping into each other a few times a week.”
“That's awful!”
“Is it?” she questioned. “It's life.”

bingqiu au where sy is thrown into the unexpectedly female body of sqq. so when sy finds out, he gets carried away with the bright idea that the best way to avoid the terrible fate of the original goods is to take on the role of a mother-figure for luo binghe.
after all, in pidw there were only two roles for good-looking women like him (and really he didn't expect the original goods to look this good actually. no wonder airplane never posted official art for this man—woman?—the dudebros would definitely clamor to make sqq part of binghe's harem despite all the abuse and torment he—she??—put the man through) that won't end in getting his entire body ripped apart: a) fall in love with luo binghe and join his harem or b) be a mother-figure for binghe and tragically die.
his prospects were, at face value, not very promising. he wasn't female so he couldn't possibly fall in love with binghe so sy has no choice but to follow through with the latter.
the system is surprisingly silent when his mind races through the idea and doesn't raise any complaints about sy messing with the plot this way.
sy believes that, with all his stock knowledge of murim and fantasy worlds, he can avoid the fates that often befell these types of characters—often sacrificial deaths that lead to the protagonist's next power-up. he could gather all the artifacts for level-ups and give them to binghe at the right time!
another good way to lock in on the surviving mother-figure role is by promising to be present during the protagonist's wedding. so he does just that (not understanding the dazed look that enters his bun's face) and, to really make sure, also promises the same for all of binghe's wives (to ning yingying, luo mingyan, wife #124 a defected qiong ding disciple, etc.).
suddenly, everyone in cang qiong is abuzz over rumors of sqq wanting a wedding/looking for a husband/getting wedding fever/etc. the rumors have all jumbled up at this point into a massive mess at this point.
lqg and yqy are trying to figure out if sqq is trying to subtly shoot them a sign by approaching their sister/disciple.
meanwhile, sy thinks that he's totally got this and how on track he is with his plan when binghe accidentally slips and calls him, "mom" one time. unfortunately, all he did was stir up the hidden pseudo-oedipus complex in his poor bun.

I get that calling white lotus lbh a sticky little 'sheep' is a canon translation and stuck in the fandom now anyway, but I do feel the intended spirit of the original word wasn't the sheeple/dumb herd animal that's more common in the western world, but instead something actually conveying sweetness, innocence, purity and youth - lamb.
Famous for being utterly adorable and following around their mothers, gambolling in sunny meadows, curly white wool shining.
And NOW we can talk about black sheep/wolf in sheep's clothing metaphors.

Thinking about how Stone and Rob were locked out of their bank accounts and had zero access to outside funds after sm1, so with how much surgery costs Stone had to travel all the way from Montana to Mexico to get access to cheaper procedures and temporarily flee the country they were wanted in…and on top of that Stone helped build or built the crab all by himself to safely house him and robotnik, staying by his bedside all day and taking care of every single one of his needs…

My current version, of my ever-evolving theory, on what constitutes "aromantic stories" is that first off, there's absolutely a wide spectrum between 1, "this is explicitly undeniably about aromanticism," and 2, "there sure is a noteworthy amount of aro subtext, but representing aros clearly wasn't the author's intent." But the spectrum is best completed not as a straight line, but as a triangle, where the 3rd point is "the story probably wasn't created with aromanticism at the forefront of anyone's mind, but was created with subverting particular expectations related to romantic relationships in mind." And in my experience, a lot of juicy aromanticism-related experiences that are underrepresented in their own right can lie in that third option, regardless of whether the characters are aro-spec or allo or kind of whatever you headcanon.
So, what does make a story on this spectrum "aromantic?" IDK, I wouldn't necessarily include all or most of the firm 2s (unintentional subtext) under the aromantic story mantle. But when you get into the gray areas that inch a little closer to 1 and 3, let alone the gray area between 1 and 3 where intent is ambiguous but ultimately may not matter, it makes sense that different people will have different takes.

Jiang Cheng being 'hyper-aggressive' is likely a result of him having to defend and protect his Sect after it nearly got destroyed.
The mere fact he regularly gets called 'Jiang Cheng' (Birth/Personal Name) rather than 'Jiang Wanyin' (Courtesy Name) by nearly everyone after the Sunshot Campaign and the War shows that many didn't take him seriously.
Jiang Cheng probably had to further sharpen his aggressiveness in order to defend himself and to not allow himself to get walked all over by the other Sect Leaders. Unlike the Gusu Lan, Qinghe Nie, and Lanling Jin which all had a sword brotherhood amongst them, the Yunmeng Jiang Sect really didn't have any solid solid allys like that. The only ally Jiang Cheng had was Jin Ling and Jin Ling was still just a baby.
I currently don't remember if Nie Huisang and Jiang Cheng still even interact outside of official Sect related business with Nie Huisang doing his decade long scheme to cause Jin Guangyao's downfall and Jiang Cheng being busy with keeping his Sect alive.
There's a bit of a parallel between them as both being young heirs being suddenly thrust into leadership after their family member's death, but the big difference is the fact that Nie Huisang had Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao (even if NHS hated JGY), while Jiang Cheng had no one to support him.
Any peers that Jiang Cheng would've had to support or at least be there in the form of friendship were all dead, busy, or were otherwise not willing to interact with him.
Nie Huisang – Brother is dead, New Sect Leader, Has his whole revenge scheme.
Jin Zixuan – Dead
Wei Wuxian – Dead, Was already ostracised by the Cultivation world and couldn't be seen with the Yunmeng Jiang
Lan Wangji – Busy recovering from the 33 strikes for three years, Busy helping to raise Lan Sizhui/A-Yuan, and Hated Jiang Cheng for helping in Wei Wuxian's death so he didn't even want to interact with Jiang Cheng
Including the other Sect Leaders:
Lan Xichen – Busy with Sect Business, Busy with making sure Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue didn't kill each other (failed sadly), and Busy with trying to make sure Lan Wangji was healing, and didn't really interact with Jiang Cheng outside of Sect Business
Nie Mingjue (When he was alive) - Busy fighting Jin Guangshan and Jin Guangyao, Facing Qi Deviations, Didn't interact with Jiang Cheng outside of Sect Business, Dies
Jin Guangshan (When he was alive) – It's Jin Guangshan.
Jin Guangyao – It's Jin Guangyao, he was busy with everything.
He really didn't have anyone to help him but himself. He made mistakes and really terrible decisions and he's not totally innocent, but there's more depth to him than just him being some one-dimensional villain that is irredeemable. I, for one, would've broken if I was put in his position.
His aggressive nature also pushed away anyone else who wasn't already used to his nature (which is practically everyone who was still alive before Jin Ling came into the picture).

Ended up pirating all of Hazbin for the sake of my younger days (used to be a fan when I was around 14/15, before all the stuff with Viv came out) and I am so surprised by how I felt... nothing for the most part. Like a lot of the show's storylines feel like they was crammed in there with no real pacing. A lot of this should have been season 2 territory, which is a sentiment I've seen echoed around, but also... it feels as if the show is trying to be episodic while also having a long narrative thread, which just doesn't work with just 8 episodes. Especially not when paced like this. So I kinda ended up feeling nothing for the most part. All the events got a "Oh, great, so what?" reaction out of me because there was little to no buildup to most of them.
Sir Pentious was always a fave of mine so I was glad to see they kept him around and, though I think we should have had more episodes with him as a villain, I think how he ended up was fitting for what little of an arc he had. I am livid about what they did to Cherri and Mimzy.
I fucking loved Mimzy, I have no idea why they sent her away -- having someone like her at the Hotel would have been a blast considering how the others are already on the road to redemption. She would have balanced it out by being a regular sinner, someone who doesn't care about redemption and won't probably ever care unless it's in her best interests to. Plus her friendship with Alastor was quite cute, they bounce off of each other very well imo. Plus I could see her have a bit of a conflict with both Charlie and Vaggie because of her ways of acting. I'm so sorry they took that from you girlboss.
And Cherri... dear lord where WAS she? She should have been a lot more present. I used to like her relationship with Angel and I even think Cherrisnake is cute conceptually, but both these relationship had... little to no room to breathe imo.
#hazbin hotel critical#not putting this in the main tag#i wouldnt call myself a fan but i guess i can mourn what could have been#not considering viv and her controversities for a second... the pilot had a very nice feeling to it#that the series was not able to replicate#i think my liking of mimzy should come as a surprise to NO ONE LMAOOOO#i love evil selfish women im sorry ... sue me#we need to save mimzy sir pen and cherribomb from hazbin everyone else can rot#ok in all fairness i will give the show credit for ONE thing#i kind of enjoyed adam and lute as antagonists. adam is insufferable which is awesome#it makes it easy to hate him as a villain. and lute being his right hand woman makes sense#they read like a christian couple (term used loosely) where the man is a misogynistic asshole and the woman just kinda endorses it#which is perfect if you wanna make a critique of heaven and the humans who go in it because they repented or whatever#i always love dumbass villains who are easy to hate (mamoon from helluva being another example of a villain i enjoy)#thats it. thats all i have in terms of compliments#would love to adress the Angel Dust controversy because as a victim of SA (and CSA) myself I think there is nuance to be found in --#-- having a discussion about how we see survivors and how we portray the abuse they endure#i was an unconventional victim too. i kind of see a glimpse of me in Angel which is why I was LIVID when I got the full picture of the --#-- situation. but still
